Jacques Fomerand passed away suddenly on November 4, 2024.
A native of France, Jacques completed his undergraduate studies at Sciences Po in Paris and Aix en Provence before moving to the United States in 1967 to study for his Ph.D. in political science at CUNY.
He began his UN career in 1977, holding increasingly responsible positions in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). His last UN post was Director of the UN
University’s New York office. A defining feature of Jacques’ work at the UN was his teaching as an adjunct faculty at various colleges and universities such Columbia, CUNY, NYU and others.
His published academic research was well regarded. He was also a gifted teacher who inspired countless students to pursue careers in international fields. He made noted
contributions to different Model UN exercises over many years.
Following his retirement, he had a particularly close relationship with City College which organized a Memorial to him in May of last year. I and another former colleague from the UN, Joan Seymour, were among the speakers.
Jacques is survived by a wide circle of friends, former students and his loving family, including his sons Thierry and Ross and his partner Marianthi Zikopoulos.
